AI CCTV Analytics for Manufacturing: A Practical Guide
How manufacturing and warehouse operations use existing CCTV cameras for safety, security and production monitoring.
The camera footage you already have is an untapped signal
Most factories and warehouses already run CCTV for security. That same footage can also answer operational questions: is a machine idle, is a danger zone being entered, is PPE being worn, is material moving where it should. AI video analytics reads the existing stream instead of requiring new sensors on every line.
Start with one measurable problem
Production-line monitoring, machine idle detection, PPE compliance and danger-zone intrusion are common starting points because each has a clear before-and-after metric: incidents avoided, downtime flagged earlier, or compliance logged automatically instead of manually. Pick the one with the clearest cost of not knowing, and prove it there first.
Check camera compatibility before committing
Analytics accuracy depends on camera placement, resolution and lighting at the point that matters, not just owning a camera that points roughly the right way. A short compatibility review against the existing CCTV layout avoids discovering gaps after rollout.
Decide where alerts need to go
An analytic is only useful if the right person sees the alert in time to act. Map each event type — intrusion, PPE gap, idle machine — to a channel (dashboard, WhatsApp, SMS, email) and an owner, before go-live rather than after the first missed alert.
Edge or cloud depends on the site
Sites with unreliable connectivity or strict latency needs usually suit edge processing; multi-site operations wanting centralized visibility usually suit a cloud or hybrid model. The right choice depends on network reality at each site, not a blanket preference.
