CCTV-Based Attendance vs Biometric Attendance: What Actually Differs
A practical comparison of face-recognition CCTV attendance and fingerprint or card-based biometric systems for Indian and UAE workforces.
Both are biometric — the difference is the hardware and the queue
Fingerprint and card-based systems require a dedicated device and a queue at a fixed point, with a shared touch surface. CCTV-based face recognition attendance reuses cameras already covering an entry point, so there is no new hardware queue and no shared surface — attendance is captured as people walk through, not at a scanner.
Dedicated hardware has a different failure mode
Fingerprint scanners can fail to read worn or dirty fingerprints common in factory and field environments; card systems fail when a card is forgotten or shared (buddy punching). Camera-based recognition depends instead on lighting, camera placement and image quality at the entry point — a different, and for many sites more manageable, set of conditions to control for.
Multi-site and field teams favor camera-based approaches
A dedicated biometric device needs physical installation and maintenance at every location. Camera-based attendance can extend to any site with compatible existing CCTV, including construction and field sites where a fixed device is impractical.
Privacy and consent requirements apply either way
Both approaches process biometric data and require consent, retention limits, access controls and secure deletion under frameworks like India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act. The hardware choice does not change this obligation — only the deployment and data-handling design does.
Choose based on your sites, not the category
A single fixed office with one entry point may do fine with either approach. Multiple sites, field or construction teams, or a desire to avoid new hardware queues generally favor camera-based systems like FaceTrack. Dense, high-security single points of entry may still favor a dedicated device. Match the approach to the actual site conditions.
